Description
The ion chromatography system (930 Compact IC flex, Metrohm) combined with a combustion unit and absorption module is used for the determination of halogens and sulfur in food and environmental samples. This integrated instrumentation enables the determination of extractable or adsorbable organic halogens and sulfur after complete oxidation of organic compounds to the corresponding inorganic ions, which are subsequently separated by ion chromatography and detected using a conductivity detector. The method is suitable for the screening of halogenated and sulfur-containing organic compounds where targeted analysis of individual substances is not feasible, typically in the case of unknown or unexpected contaminants. The system finds applications both in food and feed control and in the environmental field (soils, waters, sediments), where it provides information on the overall burden of organic halogens and sulfur compounds.
